The sixth annual ANNIKA Invitational begins Friday, January 17 on the Watson Course at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Florida. The event will feature 72 of the world’s best female junior golfers from 15 different countries competing in a 54-hole stroke play competition on the par-72 layout.
Created in 2009, the ANNIKA Invitational is an elite junior golf championship founded by Annika whose goal is to utilize her experience to inspire and develop the next generation of junior golfers through education and competitive golf. The ANNIKA Invitational is “more than golf” as after each round the players are treated to a clinic and educational sessions led by Annika and her team. The event has won the AJGA’s Newcomer of the Year (2009), Invitational of the Year (2010), and Media (2011) awards.
Last year’s champion, Bethany Wu, is back to defend her crown after winning with a tournament record of 10-under-par. Wu, who is verbally committed to UCLA, led wire-to-wire to earn her third career AJGA victory and first Invitational win en route to earning First Team Rolex Junior All-American honors.
Eighteen of the top 25 girls in the Polo Golf Rankings are scheduled to compete including eight of the top 10. The field includes a strong international contingent featuring Mathilda Cappeliez (France), the highest-ranked international player in the field and Virginia Elena Carta (Italy), a member of the European Junior Solheim Cup team. Also in the field are six players who earned exemptions from their top-three finishes at the overseas ANNIKA Invitational events which include AI Europe champion, Malene Krolboll Hansen (Denmark) and AI Mission Hills champion, Rong Ji (China).
Be sure to follow all of the scores on the AJGA’s ANNIKA Invitational website at https://www.ajga.org/MicroSite/index.asp?TN=2014001#. Good luck to all of the girls competing!
