Twenty-four teams qualified for the NCAA Championship this past weekend after 72 teams battled it out for the eight available spots at each of the three regionals. Alabama, USC and Duke entered their respective regionals as the No. 1 seed and each left with another team title and a spot at the NCAA Championship thanks to the help of ANNIKA Invitational alumni. These top three schools each started three ANNIKA Invitational alumni in their regional lineups and were three out of the 17 schools that qualified for the NCAA Championship that had at least one ANNIKA Invitational alumni in their lineup.

Here is a recap of the top performances by ANNIKA Invitational alumni from the NCAA Regionals:

East Regional – Auburn University GC, Auburn, Alabama

Stephanie Meadow, a two-time participant of the ANNIKA Invitational USA, led Alabama to the East Regional title for their fifth consecutive win and seventh overall title of the season. Stephanie also won the individual title by six strokes with rounds of 68-66-69 for a 13-under-par 203 total. Her 13-under-par total tied an Alabama school record for lowest 54-hole score. This is Stephanie’s second consecutive win after she took home the SEC individual title two weeks earlier.

Stephanie, who competed in the ANNIKA Invitational USA in 2009 and 2010, is currently the No. 2 ranked college player in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and the No. 7 ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. As a junior golfer, she was a two-time AJGA Rolex Junior All-American. As a college golfer, she was named an NGCA All-American her first two years and was the 2011 SEC Freshman the Year. She has competed in three LPGA majors including this year’s Kraft Nabisco Championship where she made the cut and was the second low-amateur. Stephanie is the reigning Ladies British Open Amateur champion and was a member of the victorious GB&I team at the 2012 Curtis Cup.

Other Notable AI Alumni Notes: Kelly Shon, a former ANNIKA Invitational USA participant and Princeton junior, advanced as an individual to the NCAA Championship by finishing runner-up to Stephanie with rounds of 71-68-70. Kelly, who is the reigning Ivy League champion, is the second player in Princeton history to advance to NCAAs.

West Regional – Stanford GC, Palo Alto, California

Annie Park, a four-time participant of the ANNIKA Invitational USA, led USC to a one-shot victory at the West Regional title for their school-record sixth win of the year. This was USC’s ninth regional team title which set an NCAA record. Annie was also an individual co-medalist after shooting rounds of 67-71-68 for a 7-under-par 206 total. This is Annie’s third career win and second consecutive title after winning the Pac-12 individual title last week.

Annie, who competed in the ANNIKA Invitational from 2009-2012, is currently the No. 1 ranked college player in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and the No. 18 ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. She was a four-time AJGA Rolex Junior All-American and finished her junior golf career with 3 AJGA victories and by qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open.

Other Notable AI Alumni Notes: Kyung Kim, a former ANNIKA Invitational USA participant and USC freshman, shot a 9-under-par 63 in the final round to set a school record and helped USC’s comeback in claiming the team title. Kyung finished the event T-3rd individually.

Central Regional – Jimmie Austin OU GC, Norman, Oklahoma

Alejandra Cangrejo, a two-time participant of the ANNIKA Invitational USA, led Duke to a six-shot win at the Central Regional for the school’s third win of the season and eighth overall regional title. Alejandra, finished the event T-2nd individually with rounds of 72-69-70 for a career-best 5-under-par 211 total. This also marked the first time Alejandra has posted three consecutive rounds at even par or better.

Alejandra, who competed in the ANNIKA Invitational USA in 2009 and 2010, finished runner-up at the 2009 ANNIKA Invitational USA. As a junior golfer, she was a two-time AJGA Rolex Junior All-American and finished her career with one AJGA victory and a win at the Heritage Junior Championship.

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – The ANNIKA Intercollegiate, a new college golf tournament co-founded by the ANNIKA Foundation and Golfweek, will be held September 27-30, 2014 at Reunion, a Salamander Golf & Spa Resort.

The 54-hole, stroke-play event will take place on Reunion’s Watson Course and feature 12 teams from the top Division I women’s programs. Also scheduled for the tournament weekend is a gala reception during which Annika will present the inaugural ANNIKA Award to the nation’s best female player in college golf.

The recently announced ANNIKA Award is the female equivalent of the Haskins Award, which for 42 years has been given to the most outstanding Division I male golfer. Selection is governed by the Haskins Commission of Columbus, Ga., which will oversee the vote of players, coaches and media for both the Haskins and ANNIKA awards.

“This event offers a fantastic platform to expand my Foundation’s mission to establish greater playing opportunities for junior and college golfers alike,” said Annika, the 1991 NCAA Champion and co-player of the year. “We hold our AJGA invitational on the Watson Course at Reunion every year, so I am excited that many of the girls who competed here as juniors will be able to come back and play with their college teams. We’re excited to work with Golfweek to make the ANNIKA Intercollegiate a ‘can’t miss’ kick-off to the NCAA golf season.”

“Golfweek is a long-time supporter of college golf,” said Golfweek Publisher Jereme Day. “This new tournament, in conjunction with the creation of the ANNIKA Award, embodies our dedication to growing the game and nurturing the LPGA stars of tomorrow.”

“Reunion Resort is thrilled to embark on another successful affiliation with Annika,” said Sheila C. Johnson, Founder of Salamander Hotels and Resorts. “We share her devotion to promoting golf’s myriad positive attributes and are excited to help make this one of the most important tournaments on the women’s schedule.”

The recent announcement of the ANNIKA Award comes at a perfect time in the college golf season. As conference championships concluded this past weekend, five more former ANNIKA Invitational players took home individual conference titles. Remember these names, as there is a good chance you may see them come up in the discussion for the inaugural ANNIKA Award to be presented in 2014 to the best female collegiate golfer.

Pac-12 Conference

USC freshman Annie Park won the Pac-12 individual title by two strokes over teammate Sophia Popov with rounds of 70-70-69 for a 7-under-par 209 total. Her performance helped lead No. 1 ranked USC to a 24-shot victory and the program’s fourth Conference title. Annie adds her name to a list of outstanding Pac-12 individual champions which also includes Annika, when she won in 1992 en route to leading Arizona to the team title.

Annie was a four-time participant of the ANNIKA Invitational from 2009-2012 and was a four-time AJGA Rolex Junior All-American. She finished her junior golf career with 3 AJGA victories and by qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open. Annie is currently the No. 1 ranked college player in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.

Big East Conference

Notre Dame freshman Lindsey Weaver shared individual medalist honors at the Big East Championship after rounds of 71-70-69 for a 6-under-par 210 total. Her win fueled Notre Dame to a 14-stroke victory for the team’s third Big East title in six years.

Lindsey competed in the ANNIKA Invitational twice in 2011 and 2012 and was a six-time AJGA Rolex Junior All-American. Last year, Lindsey became the second woman to break 60 when she shot a 59 during a PING Junior Interclub match at Desert Mountain in Arizona. Coincidentally, Annika, the first woman to shoot 59, also did it at a PING event in Arizona at Moon Valley Country Club in 2001 at the LPGA’s Standard Register PING. Lindsey qualified for the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open and is the only player in AJGA history to win an event in seven consecutive years (2006-2012).

Western Athletic Conference

Denver junior Tonje Daffinrud routed the field en route to claiming individual honors at the WAC Championship. On the strength of rounds of 68-72-69, Tonje won by six strokes with her 7-under-par 209 total and helped Denver win its 10th consecutive conference title and first as a member of the WAC (previous nine were in the Sun Belt Conference).

Tonje, from Tonsberg, Norway, competed in the inaugural ANNIKA Invitational in 2009. She represented Europe in the 2009 Junior Solheim Cup and was a member of the Norwegian National Team. Other notable accomplishments include runner-up finishes at the 2009 European Championship and 2010 French Ladies Cup.

Ivy League

Princeton junior Kelly Shon won the Ivy League Championship individual title in a playoff over fellow ANNIKA Invitational alumni and Harvard freshman Christine Lin. Both players tied with a two-over-par 218 total, but Kelly won on the first playoff hole. However, Christine’s Harvard team came away with the team title by edging out Kelly’s Princeton team by one stroke.

Kelly competed in the 2010 ANNIKA Invitational and was a three-time AJGA Rolex Junior All-American. She competed in the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open and had three career AJGA victories.

Christine played in the ANNIKA Invitational in 2011 and 2012 and was named a 2011 AJGA HP Scholastic All-American. Her overall performance this year earned her Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors.

Mid-American Conference

Kent State sophomore Jennifer Ha claimed individual honors by three shots at the MAC Championship while shooting rounds of 76-72-74 for a 6-over-par 222 total. Jennifer also helped Kent State win the team title by 28 shots over runners-up Eastern Michigan and Toledo for the school’s 15th consecutive MAC championship.

Jennifer, from Calgary, Alberta, played in the 2011 ANNIKA Invitational and had a strong junior career that included wins at the Alberta Junior Girls Championship, CN Future Links Western Championship and a victory at the AJGA Junior at Centennial. Jennifer was also named last year’s MAC Freshman of the Year.

Playing in the 11-14 year old division, Rachel was the only player to finish the event under par by firing rounds of 71-70 for a one-under-par 141 total. She also recorded the lowest rounds on each respective day.

Rachel, who is a member of the ANNIKA Elite Program, was playing in her first tournament since the ANNIKA Invitational where she finished T-5th against one of the top fields in junior golf. She finished that event tied with Simin Feng and Linnea Strom, the 2009 ANNIKA Invitational and 2012 ANNIKA Invitational Europe champions. At only 13 years old, Rachel’s win, along with her breakout performance at the ANNIKA Invitational are just a glimpse of great things sure to come from this young golfer.

Congratulations Rachel on a fantastic win! We are very proud of you and it comes as no surprise that you are already accomplishing so much at a young age!

Emma shot rounds of 68-69-70 for a 9-under-par 207 total to win the individual crown by two shots over UCLA’s Erynne Lee and UC Davis’ Demi Runas. Emma’s excellent play also helped lead Alabama to a 19-under-par team total and new tournament record. The PING/ASU Invitational featured 11 of the top 25 women’s teams in the Golfweek rankings and was the last regular-season tournament for many schools competing in their conference championships starting this week.

Emma, who competed in the inaugural ANNIKA Invitational in 2009, had an outstanding junior career highlighted by 10 AJGA victories and selections to the United States team for the 2010 Junior Ryder Cup and 2011 PING Junior Solheim Cup. She was a four-time AJGA Rolex Junior All-American from 2008-2011 and also qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open in 2011 and 2012. Emma holds the AJGA record for largest margin of victory of 22 strokes when she won the 2010 AJGA Huntsville Junior. At that same event, Emma became the first and only girl in AJGA history to break 200 in a 54-hole tournament when she shot a 15-under-par 198.

Congratulations Emma on continuing your winning ways into the collegiate level! Good luck to you and the Crimson Tide at this weekend’s SEC Championship!

Last Monday, seven ANNIKA Invitational alumni were in the 112-player field at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. By the end of Tuesday afternoon, that number became eight when 14-year-old Angel Yin won the Kraft Nabisco Legends Junior Challenge with a 5-under-par 67 to earn the final spot into the LPGA’s first Major of the year.

Annika, who served as host and honorary starter for the Legends Junior Challenge, was on hand to greet each of the thirty juniors selected to compete for the coveted spot into the Kraft Nabisco Championship. 11 of the juniors were familiar faces for Annika as they were past ANNIKA Invitational participants. The Legends Junior Challenge was contested on the Arnold Palmer Course at Mission Hills Country Club with a secondary best-ball format in which three juniors were paired with an LPGA legend. Angel was paired with 1980 Kraft Nabisco champion Donna Caponi, whose team also won. As a result, Team Caponi received $10,000 to donate to the charity of her choice, the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Angel Yin

Angel, who played in the ANNIKA Invitational the past two years, was the youngest player in the 2013 Kraft Nabisco Championship field at the age of 14 and had an excellent showing by making her first career LPGA cut by shooting rounds of 73-75-74-71 for a 5-over-par 293 total. For a brief moment during the first round, Angel found herself leading the Kraft Nabisco Championship after birdies on holes 1 and 2. This was Angel’s second career start in an LPGA Major after she qualified for the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open at the age of 13. Angel finished the Kraft Nabisco Championship T-55th and tied with players such as Vicky Hurst and 2012 Kraft Nabisco Championship runner-up I.K. Kim.

Besides Angel, three other ANNIKA Invitational alumni made the cut at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. LPGA player Jessica Korda finished T-25th with a 2-under-par 286 total after beginning the final round in 3rd place. Amateurs Stephanie Meadow (289) and Ashlan Ramsey (290) finished 47th and T-48th respectively. Both Stephanie and Ashlan were second and third low-amateur respectively behind 15-year-old sensation Lydia Ko.

Congratulations again to all of our girls on their success at the Kraft Nabisco Championship! It was great following each and every one of you throughout the week and we are sure that this is just the first of many times we’ll see you competing at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

(RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.) – Annika Sorenstam’s name is magic in professional golf and it soon will become synonymous with women’s collegiate golf.

Beginning in 2014, The ANNIKA Foundation, in conjunction with the Haskins Commission, will present The ANNIKA Award – an honor that every year will recognize the most outstanding NCAA Division I women’s golfer.

This exciting new partnership was announced April 2 at the 2013 Kraft Nabisco Championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif. – an LPGA event that Annika won on three different occasions.

The Haskins Commission, a 501(c)3 organization in Columbus, Ga., governs the Haskins Award, presented annually to the top men’s player in college golf. For 41 years, this coveted trophy has honored the late Fred Haskins, a teaching pro who instilled the values of amateur golf to generations of youthful competitors.

Annika, an eight-time Rolex LPGA Player of the Year, said the relationship between her foundation and the Haskins Commission is a natural one.

“The Haskins Award has been a prestigious accolade recognizing the best male collegiate players for over 40 years. I am thrilled to work with the Haskins Commission to create The ANNIKA Award to similarly honor the best collegiate female golfers.”

President Madden Hatcher Jr., said the Haskins Commission has been exploring a logical expansion into the women’s game and that a chance to work with the LPGA legend makes the new award even more attractive.

“We felt comfortable with Annika and her colleagues from the moment we met them. Her name and her sterling reputation will give The ANNIKA Award instant recognition and prestige and be a perfect companion to the Haskins Award whose list of winners parallel her achievements in women’s golf,” Hatcher said.

The winner of the Haskins Award is decided by a vote of college golfers and media members who cover the collegiate game and the commission will create a similar voting process for The ANNIKA Award.

The Haskins Award winner receives an automatic exemption into the Greenbrier Classic and future recipients of The ANNIKA Award will be given an exemption into the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

The ANNIKA Foundation and Golfweek magazine — official media partner of The ANNIKA Award — are also finalizing plans for a major women’s college tournament to be played in Orlando, Fla. Annika, a former college star at the University of Arizona, hopes to attract many of the top college teams in the country starting in 2014.

Born in Sweden, Annika won seven collegiate tournaments, including the 1991 NCAA Championship. That same year, she was NCAA Co-Player of the Year with Kelly Robbins and was named to the Women’s All-America team. In 1992, she was Pac-10 champion and finished second in the NCAA Championships. She turned pro that same year.

“College golf meant a lot to me and helped get my career going in the right direction. And my Foundation provides playing opportunities globally to juniors who are passionate about the game. Therefore, creating a first-class invitational tournament for the best women’s teams to kick off the college golf season is a natural progression,” Annika said.

The primary sponsor of the Haskins Award is Stifel Nicolaus, a full service brokerage and investment-banking firm based in St. Louis, Mo. Its official media sponsor is Golfweek magazine.

The award was created in 1970 and its list of winners is spectacular, beginning with Ben Crenshaw, who took home the first three. Phil Mickelson of Arizona State is the only other three-time winner (1990, 1991 and 1992). Past winners are among the top players on the 2013 PGA Tour, including Tiger Woods (1996), Matt Kuchar (1998), Luke Donald (1999) Graeme McDowell (2002) and Hunter Mahan (2003).

Justin Thomas, the 2012 winner of the Haskins Award, is a sophomore at the University of Alabama and is trying to be the first repeat winner since Mickelson more than 20 years ago.

About the ANNIKA Foundation

Annika created the ANNIKA Foundation (www.annikafoundation.org) as a way to teach children the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle through fitness and nutrition, and offer aspiring junior golfers opportunities to pursue their dreams. The Foundation has partnered with key organizations to promote healthy, active lifestyles for children, including SPARK, Florida Hospital for Children in support of its Healthy 100 Kids initiative and The First Tee in development of the Nine Healthy Habits curriculum for children.

It annually conducts four major golf events for aspiring junior girls, including an award-winning AJGA tournament, ANNIKA Invitational at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.; the ANNIKA Invitational at Mission Hills, the first all-girls junior tournament in China; the ANNIKA Invitational in Europe; and the ANNIKA Cup, a team event for the top juniors in Sweden. The Foundation awards SPARK grants to schools, is a financial supporter of Healthy 100 Kids and has endowed an ACE scholarship with the AJGA. Other key initiatives include ANNIKA Junior Day, the ANNIKA Inspiration Award and scholarships for aspiring Swedish juniors.

About the Haskins Commission

Since 1970, the Haskins Commission has provided oversight for the Haskins Award, a prestigious trophy presented every year to the outstanding male performer in college golf. Based in Columbus, Ga., the commission is a 501(c)3 organization composed of volunteers who believe in the principles and values of amateur golf. Members oversee the voting, which is decided by a vote of Division I golfers and members of the media that cover the college game. The primary sponsor of the Haskins Award is Stifel Nicolaus, a full service brokerage and investment-banking firm in St. Louis, Mo. Its official media sponsor is Golfweek magazine. The award honors the memory of the late Fred Haskins, a native of Hoylake, England, who came to Georgia in 1922 to become a teaching pro at the Country Club of Columbus. For generations, his protégés won amateur golf tournaments all over the world.

The month of April kicks off in the California desert with the LPGA’s first Major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. The KNC will be contested April 4 – 7 on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club. There will be 112 players competing over four days for the chance to take home the title and for the right to take the splash in the legendary Poppie’s Pond beside the 18th green. Of the 112 players, eight are former ANNIKA Invitational participants who will be trying to follow in the footsteps of Annika, a three-time champion of the KNC and host of this year’s Celebrity Pro-Am.

Doris Chen, Alison Lee, Stephanie Meadow, Ashlan Ramsey and Angel Yin will be competing as amateurs, while Austin Ernst, Danielle Kang and Jessica Korda will be competing as members of the LPGA Tour.Between these eight players, they have already amassed a combined 30 starts in the four LPGA majors which is impressive considering the oldest player of this group (Stephanie Meadow) is only 21 years old and the youngest player (Angel Yin) is 14 years old. They have collectively won USGA, NCAA, LPGA and British Am titles to go along with selections to Curtis Cup and Junior Solheim Cup teams. Angel Yin, who is the youngest player in the field, played her way into the event by winning the Kraft Nabisco Legends Junior Challenge on Tuesday with a 5-under-par 67. All of these girls have had success on the national and international level and it should prove to be helpful this week when they compete against the top players in the world.

We wish our girls the best of luck at the KNC as we will be following closely the entire tournament week. Be sure to follow the KNC scores at www.lpga.com and to follow the ANNIKA Foundation on Twitter at @ANNIKA_Fdn for continuous updates on our girls.
